No oil in window
02/11/09 at 15:36:41

I just finished changing the oil and checking the cam chain tensioner and put in 1.8 qts of oil.  I cannot see the oil in the window.  I start it up and it runs just fine.  I shut it down after about a minute and look and still no oil in the window.   What did I do, put the filter in wrong or something?  No leaks.
Gimme some ideas.
Thanks

O.K. Thanks I'll try a little more oil.  I got the Dyna installed and it is wussy compared to the supertrapp but it should be o.k.

If you added 1.8, its a tad low, but should be in the window i think. Gotta have the bike upright & level to read the level. If you get it looking Right in the window while its leaning on the stand, its waay too full.

I'm imagining you took the cover off to check the cam tensioner.  That would be the same as oil & filter change, right?

Engine Oil Capacity:

I tried that 2.5 thing

Once.It was so full I had to drain some.

Just adding 2 is all I do now. The book I got says 2.1, but I stopped bothering with the .1, till its time to add some, then I top her on off..

I do the 2 and check.  Add a bit again if needed and check.  I just copied and pasted the above from this site's Tech Data section.

Too much oil and you won't see the oil line either. When I bought my current '07 the previous owner had over filled and it looked like it had no oil.

Most definitely!  If you don't have one of those fancy bike stands to hold it straight (and haven't built one of the homemade ones that's on here somewhere), you can do what I do, and with the front wheel turned and locked to shift the center of balance to the left, put blocks under the kickstand until it's level.  I don't recommend doing any wrenching on anything like this though; it's fairly stable, but not THAT stable.
