savageclay Junior Member Offline SuzukiSavage.com Rocks! Posts: 93 South Carolina	Can anyone tell me hoe to stop the back firing 02/10/09 at 10:52:05 When riding and after shutdown. Not really concerned with the after shut down pop but when riding its annoying. I removed the copper plug covering the mixture screw and I cant find a correct adjustment. Bike has new spark plug. Do I need to do someting with the carb? The exhaust is tight and sealed at the header. Any help?

You have to re-jett the carb to atleast a stage one jet kit. Dyno jet makes these kits. Lancer also has a kit he sells I believe. DYno is about 50$ or so. Not a hard job to do, just a bit of a nuissance. I use a 146 main, I only get the occasional pop on shut down, and I also am using a high airflow muffler (loud).

pops while riding tend to be exhaust leaks, but can be tuning too.

Adjust out the pop at shutdown by adjusting the mixture screw an 1/8 to a 1/4 turn richer ccw after adjusting for best idle.

Check for exhaust leaks with a candle. Check all connections and all over. Older mufs do rust thru.

cold weather generally likes it a little richer.

It's kind of a comforting familiar quirk to me. It's part of the Savage's personality, right? Not to mention it keeps the cagers aware of where ya are. Also gets a nice little glance from the folks in the parking lot when ya shut 'er down.

I was laughin' so hard nearly knocked over the bike.

Backfiring is primarily a result of either a "too lean" pilot circuit or an air leak in the exhaust, and since you have said that the exhaust has good seals then you need to focus on the pilot circuit.
What is the current setting on you pilot air adjusting screw ... how many turns out?
Some engines are arble to get by with simply an adjustment of the pilot air adjusting screw while another may need a larger jet. Engines have personalities and behave a little differently.
