Pitting on aluminum forks

Does anyone know of a possible remedy for some pretty bad pitting on the outer fork tubes? I've got 31,000 miles but I don't do a lot of highway riding. My forks look terrible and it seems to have been caused by stones and other road stuff because the pitting is only on the front of the shocks. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

1) strip clear coat, sand, polish, clear coat. Put clear plastic strips on front of forks.
2) turn forks around for an even finish
3) paint black
4) ride hyway
5) learn to wheelie.

Auto parts places may have self adhesive plastic for rock chip protection. Or, clear packing tape, but it will crack & yellow, but that can be covered up with duct tape!
Awww heck, Google is your friend! Try this,
clear plastic rock chip protection sale
I saw tons of links, but this one stuck out. May be plenty more.

$16.00 & freight. Looks like a deal. 6" x 12 ' long, this could be used to protect the tank, too.
I can see this on the cars.
