tail light mod
10/16/08 at 10:45:01

A few weeks ago I installed a LED cat eye tail/brake light.  I like it except that when I brake it only got marginally brighter.  Yes, it was more noticeable, but I wanted more.  So I installed this waterproof flexible LED strip and made a 3/4 ring around the tail light.  Now, when I brake, the cat eye light doesn't change but the LED ring lights up.  Much better now.

No brake:

Good idea.I have an LED on mine too,and the brake light part isn't that noticable in the daylight. It'll blind you at night if you're right in the beam of it though.

It looks like you've got more LEDs in your tail light than mine.  That helps.  Mine is pretty bright at night with the brake on.  But since 90% of my riding is during the daytime.

I wanted to add a way to have a separate light to better differentiate tail and brake light modes.  But I didn't want to just slap another light on.  I wanted it clean and to blend in.  Since the LED piece is pretty much clear it disappears when the brake isn't on.

LOL!

I had my autobody brother-in-law fill the holes in my rear fender and repaint it.

Here's some pics pre-bags:

Wow!! That is CLEAN!! Nice job! Cool

Any chance you could post up a similar left-side rear shot? Would love to check out the belt side with that side-mount plate!

The rear looks lowered compared to stock but it isn't.  The shocks haven't been modded.  I used 1/2" spacers between the fender and frame where the top two bolts hold the fender onto the frame.  It angles the rear fender down a little.

With this mod plus recontouring the seat shape, it gives the overall illusion of the rear being lowered some without sacrificing rear suspension and ride quality.

Here's the rear fender after I got it back from my brother-in-law.

Nice clean bike there Jim! And great idea on the "fender lowering." The previous owner of my "chopped" bike had the rear shocks lowered, or used lower shocks. They don't bottom often with them set on 5, but when they do... OUCH @(#*$ !!!  Wink

Yours is a much better approach.

The light idea looks like a good one too.

I'd hesitate to move my brake light anywhere out of sight from an angle though.

I got one of these off of ebay:

They are red and are waterproof.  I ran a bead of epoxy along the edge of the strip, wrapped it around the cat eye tail light and taped it in place for it to cure overnight.  The next morning I removed the tape and rode.  That was 4 months ago and no sign of any problems with it.

It's wired to the brake.  So, rather than the tail light just getting brighter, the LED itself lights up when I brake.  It definitely catches your attention.  I feel cagers can see me braking much better now.

There are several on ebay but here's a link for one of them:

Very nice addition... I'm looking at similar options.

There was a guy on another forum that I'm on (I might have the link on my laptop, since it's not on either of my work pcs) - He made LED flex lights in any length you need, he also does ones for turn signals. The prices weren't half bad either.

I'll post it up if I can find it.
