when i did my cam chain, I pulled off the head cover while it was in the frame. It's tight, but it can be done. Putting it back together will take some thought though, there's one really long bolt in the center. And you'll have to insert into the cover then put them on together. I forgot, so I removed all of the mounting bolts and tipped the engine to one side and slipped the bolt in. Knowing this and how tight it was, I'd say go ahead and remove the mounting bolts except the rearmost one. And let it tip forward a little for some extra room.
BTW, takes just a little more effort to take the engine out of the frame. Take the pulley cover and belt cover off, take the shock off, loosen the rear axle, slip the belt off the rear pulley. There are a few wires to disconnect. lay a few pads down, lay the bike down on them, wiggle the engine out of the frame, set it up and carry it to the bench. Yeah it's heavy, more than 50 less then a hundred.
