Hello... Oil Change Question
01/05/09 at 16:55:45

Hi, new to the forum-I recently purchased a 2006 Boulevard S40 and changed the oil for the first time yesterday-the oil change thread was awesome! I rode to work and everything seemed fine, but on the ride home the I heard a rattle. I also noticed that the clutch seemed to shift a little differently. Is there a break in period for the new oil or maybe the fact that it was a little warmer than it has been here in Florida? I'm not very mechanically savvy and would appreciate any feedback.

Since you're new...
Do you know how to check the oil level?
Hold the bike straight up and down, and look into the sight glass.

Oil level is good. It's between the two lines. I also used suzuki oil.

did you replace the filter?

Asking cause a number of people and even a shop put the filter in backwards.

replaced the filter and installed it facing the correct way. The bike seemed to ride fine yesterday and this morning, but I noticed a difference on the way home from work.

hole in filter towards the engine, spring between filter and cover?

sorry to be pedantic.

otherwise can't explain rattle or shift.

Shift change usually indicates low oil level to me.

where does the rattle come from?

The usually suspects are the headlight or the speedo.

Put your hand on either and if the rattle goes away then we have fixes.

How do your gears feel?
Can you shift as smoothly as before?

And can you tell if it's somehow overheating?
(do you feel unusual heat in your legs?)

In this particular model the correct type and
amount of oil is crucial and it MUST circulate
perfectly at all times since it's air cooled only.

BTW you should always change your oil while
boiling hot (careful), this way it's thinner and
takes with it all kinds of nasty deposits; get a
magnetic plug   Wink

Exactly what kind of oil did you use anyway?

Hey Stimpy- I rode to work today and everything seemed fine. I noticed a rattle but seems to have occurred on the same stretch of road and I believe it was the speedometer rattling. I think I am just paranoid about messing up my bike by working on it. I used the Suzuki Oil from the dealership. I did notice on the way home today that the engine seemed warm between my legs but I think it has to do with the fact that I've only been riding 2-3 weeks and the weather for that time period has been between 60-75 degrees and today it was 85 degrees here in Florida. I removed the filter cover last night and checked that the oil filter was installed correctly (it was) and put it back on. There is no leakage and the oil level is between the two lines in the window. The oil filter doesn't screw on or anything, right-the opening fits over the o-ring and the "nipple that sticks out and is held in place by the spring and the oil filter cover?

Thanks, Matt
