Transmissions/clutches are pretty much black magic to me, so maybe one of you upstanding citizens can answer my question.

Just put the engine back in and hooked the clutch cable up... and there is no resistance in it whatsoever. The lever just sits against the grip. Doesn't even try. The clutch arm assembly does spring back when i just pull it up with my hand... but it sure doesn't seem very strong.

However... I have not yet put oil in her. I know its a wet plate clutch and all... so does it need the oil in there to function?

No it should work fine with out oil.

Did you remember to put in the rod?

And sometimes the cam that pushes in the rod will break.

Take the cover back off and check.

Also you can check operation prior to getting it all back together, a few bolts north and south of the clutch center should allow you to operate the clutch lever with a cresant wrench.

Also, remember there are two adjustment points. Course adjustment at the engine side of the cable and fine adjustment at the lever side.
