Backfiring
11/19/08 at 10:51:14

i rode for the first time since my k&n install today. now when deccelerating i dont hear any backfiring anymore when i did in the same temps before pretty often. but now the only time i hear a backfire is when i shut the bike off. i never heard this before at least it wasnt too noticeable. what could be my problem if i have any? i am going to rejet as soon as they get delivered does anyone have any suggestions for jet sizes?
i have a 87 savage with a dyna exhaust and k&n intake

Sounds to me like you got the jets right already.

The back fire issue was probably solved with the muff.  and caused either by a leaky header gasket, muffler seal or perforated muff.

Now you just have the shutdown boom.  Turn the pilot screw out a 1/4 turn (3 turns out max) till it goes away.  At 3 turns, go up a size in the pilot jet and start over again.

i actually had on the muffler first so maybe the air filter helped? but i thought when your backfiring that you would be running too lean so wouldnt the air filter and exhaust make it run more lean? so as of now i dont need to rejet correct? and the mixture you are talking about is the one you have to drill to get to right?

That be the one.

Also look at your sparkplug, white too lean, black too rich, light tan purrrfect.

and take it easy with that '87 carb - it came from the factory different jets - like a 155 main instead of the 145 of the later models

what do you mean take it easy? as in it should be fine the way it is or just be careful not to confuse it with the newer ones?

Too rich can cause a backfire (afterfire) too...
If you can...try a ride up a mountain or a ride on a humid day...if afterfires increase you're too rich...if they decrease you're too lean...

ok so now its not as bad but it still takes a bit for the bike to catch up at WOT but if i let off a little then gradually go back to WOT it wont lag behind. is this a carb/jet problem?

don't follow the guide lines on here for the '95 and up bikes - like the spacer, pilot, and mainjet common changes - they really don't apply to your year
