Gas gauge for the savage?
10/27/08 at 20:40:26

i ran out of gas today on the highway. i know it was a dumb thing to not pay attention to my gas levels but id like a gas gauge anyway. is there any on sale or one that anyone has? i saw one guy had drilled two holes in the tank and connected a tube to see the gas.

What if you just take a "Y" off the petc0ck and loop a clear line up into gas cap... saves drilling the tank.
Fugly!...I ain't gonna' do it, but it might work...
Make a pretty one and I'll want one too...
Good luck.

What happened to the old method of just filling up the tank after 100 miles of riding??

As often as these bikes need gas, how is it possible to not know its time for gas? Flashing brake lights, tachs, gas gauges, sheeshaMoondo, its just the simnplest little thing out there with a Big Fat piston in it. If theres someone behind me, I watch them close, if they act like they dont see me I weave & hit brakes & make the light flash a few times at odd intervals. I ride the heck out of it & change gears when it sounds like I should, almost 20,ooo miles & no pieces poking out yet. I look in the tank before I leave the house if I cant tremember the mileage at last fillup. Its a rude, crude Fun machine, why Complicate things? Spend that frilly $$$ On hop up stuff & Get Down!

I zipped tied a plastic tube to the cables on handle bar risers. Keep a grease pencil in it and write mileage on brake fluid resevoir at each fill-up. some where between 100 and 120 miles later get gas.

I use a white or green crayon to write the miles on the speedo face.  Works kind of like a trip odometer that way.

There used to be manual trip counters back in the day, when cars were equipped sparsly. You could glue them to your dash board. I tried to find one of those, but no avail.

I've found the easiest way is to fill up every time the odometer passes the next 100 mile increment..I start looking at xx90 miles which , with the 20 miles the reserve holds, usually gives me plenty of time.

A lot of us just use a small luggage lock...mines zip-tied to the right mirror mount.

when the Sigma tripcomputer ($25 with lots of other functions) gets to 90 miles I start looking for a gas station.

I'm lucky as my daily trips are fairly short  -- I just fill up every Saturday.

just run on the "On" position until it starts to cut out and then turn it to "PRI" Until I can find a Gas Station! Worked so far!
