Yep, unload some wiring & that solenoid & just leave a piece of the cable, make a loop, or run it loose up to something on the frame, just the cable, no housing, & grab it & shove it one way or the other, so gloved hands can handle it easy.

The starter button sents power to the timer circuit.  The timer controls power to the solenoid then after a fraction of a second to the starter motor.
So,  if the motor starts it's not the starter button.   I think it may just be a loose connection....  but....   you may need to get your hands dirty and do some troubleshooting.
