I was just curuious about the gs500 engine and the savage engine in a hardtail bobber/chopper. Im pretty positive that the gs500 would out do the savage engine, but would either be a better heart than a cb550 or xs 650? still

So you'd be buying at least 25 year old lumps which sooner or later need a gasket or a model specific seal or whatever. LS650 and GS500 parts are much easier to find.

Reply #2 - 09/20/08 at 02:59:50 Saw a cool GS500 custom over at bikepics.com recently and got to thinkin' ... it's a tried and true motor, an air-cooled parallel twin (one of the best st-ups goin' for a Bike engine IMHO) ... and wondered ... would it fit in a Savage frame? Anyone ever tried this??

There are ALOT of parts out there for the XS,from frames to remanufactured engines,to turn key custom bikes that are all new.
Check out, mikes xs parts,ardcore choppers,gs motor company,tcbros,etc.
There are a bunch of them being built on another site I am on. www.bobbertalk.com check it out a bunch of good guys over there.
I don't klnow about the Honda 650,but the 750 has alot of stuff available.Check out www.hondachopper.com they can tell you more about it.
There is a guy(Tigman)on here,and a couple other sites that will hardtail a Savage frame.

Damm, I just took a look at what Heiden Tuning has and one could possibly build a complete brand new XS with what they've got. And the parts are actually quite cheap. I nearly bought one with Uncle Bunt's hardtail frame in 1995 or 1996 but got a Savage instead.

Reply #6 - 09/20/08 at 13:57:35 keep in mind that hondachopper.com is a sohc 750 site only. 69 -78 models only. i can garauntee that a 750 won't come close to fitting in a savage frame. i have 4 of them, they are quite large. try slickschoppers.com or thechopperunderground.com.

Demin,... both those bikes look pretty rad, and have the look Im going for. Realisticly I would like it to be a bar hopper/ around town bike. I don't think I would really go more than 50 miles round trip on the thing... But I still want a quick bike capable of highway speeds... how does your savage hold up to the yamaha? Would I be better off waiting for a GS500 engine?

The 650 isn't built yet,but I will tell you that all of my Savages are capable of highway speeds.I live about 25 miles north of Dallas,and I run the interstates all the time between 70,and 80 mph,and they get there fairly quick.Not a sport bike by far,but good enough.There are threads on here for carb,and exhaust mods,and for chain conversion for more topend.Oh by the way I'm 6'3"and 270lbs(ish).

Reply #14 - 11/09/08 at 09:52:31 That's a good lookin' scoot .If they're done right they'll bring the money.Look past the flat black paint.Whitewalls,pinstriping,etc. none of that is cheap.I got just short of 3g's for the purple one.When(if)I ever get my other two bulds done they'll be right in the same range.
