i plan on pulling the plug out of the carb when i rejet but i don't have a slide hammer. could i just clamp on the trusty vice grips to the sheet metal screw and yank on it or is there another way if you don't have a slide hammer?

I watched a guy use a drywall screw & dikes, just pry against a hard spot on the carb. Its really not in there that hard. I dont remember how I went at it, but it must have been easy, cuz I dont remember resorting to extreme means.

Vice grips and a sheet metal screw fetched mine with no hassles. Be real careful not to drill too deep, just break through the brass cover piece and quit right there. You can eat the screw head underneath if you go blasting on through the sheet metal.

I documented it with pictures in the tech section. In the third picture I show the drywall screw, just lock vice grips on it, wiggle left & right and pull.

How hard should you pull? The plug has more resistance than the pull tab on a beer can, and less resistance than most of the girls I dated in high school, if that gives you an idea what to expect. Mind you. I went to High School in the late 70's so factor that in....
