Check the spark plug.  That was my problem.

The plug has about 700 miles on it and looked ok, it had spark holding the plug aganist the head and cranking the engine, it was also wet with gas. I wonder if I might have a compression or valve/ignition timming problem. When the bike runs it runs ok.

When you are trying to start it, are you using the choke or do you just crank on the battery till it fires?  When you go to start it, do you have the petcock in the run position?

When my bike was hard to start after a long period of storage, I found that putting my fuel select switch to PRI would reduce the amount of cranking necessary to get the bike fired.  I also found that I had a slight leak in the vacuum line leading from the petcock to the carb.  That leak kept the fuel from being delivered in proper quantity when I was trying a cold start.  When I replaced the line, the problem went away, but I would still put the selector in PRI position for cold starts.

I set it to PRI to start with. The choke position dosen't seem to make any difference. I'm stumped right now. I'll fool with it tonight and see what happens .

You only need the PRI for a couple of seconds (10-15).  All it does is put some gas in the carb fuel bowl.

For me, in the summer, no choke and a little throttle.
in the winter, no throttle and some choke.

If mine has been sitting a few days, I hit prime, put the choke on the 1st click & hit the starter. Turning the throttle even the slightest bit means it wont start for a while.

The reason for the sitting was atthe beach. Anyway, I got home last night turned the key on pulled in the clutch hit the button and it started, and it started fine this morning as well. So, I don't know what's going on with it.
