Relocating rear turn signals for saddle bags?

All,

Is it a foregone conclusion that I will have to relocate the rear turn signals for saddle bags ?
If not, can anyone chime in with supports and bags that they've used, or know for sure fit without relocation (besides the OEM ones)?

I've been doing a lot of looking to no avail so far. Seen lots of stuff that say they 'fit' the Savage, but 'fitting' in the Savage world often means 'fitting via retrofitting'.

There's a pretty good write-up of a turn signal relocation to fit some pretty nice sized bags somewhere on the board here. They used the stock license plate mount to hold their new turn signal mount. I think it was within the last week or so that I saw it.

I'm thinking of going with a tail light with integrated turn signals, removing the stock signals and then having that entire area to run bags with.

But for now? I'm running the stock supports and Suzuki saddlebags.

I recently got a J and P Cycles catalog (from their "super store" in Daytona) and they have a 'light mounting bar' that mounts to the license plate bracket and has 2 tabs on the end for mounting lights, $6.99 - it is not on their website though, but it is on page 120 of the print catalog. You can browse the print catalog online too http://www.jpcycles.com/catalog/2008MetricCatalog/
but on there it is page 122

I was going to remount mine for fitting bags and was going to get this and try it out, but then I decided I am going to get hard bags with lights built in.

I've got some Givi soft bags that miounted up w/o moving the sigs, but, The back of the bas are soft enough that they are gonna require adding a stiffener to keep them from wrapping around the little pracket I made for the right side. I was hoping the beltguard would hold it off enugh, but, alas, no, it will need reinforcing, also.

Ohh, they cost about $100.00 & really, kinda wimpy. They call for no more than 16 pounds(?) IIRC per side, but, I have loaded them well past that with no real sign of distress. A couple of seams were injured some, buyt super glue seems to have handled it okay. You could do better, & you could do worse.The application matters. Soft bags & caught in the rain is a hassle, but the come with a plastic overbag to slip on if it rains.It works well, Ive used it a few times.

I then mounted the new signals using the rear most fender hole from the side rail. Works great if you don't mind losing the sissy bar and side rails.

I have River Road compacts which are much larger than the Willie and Max that came with the bike. I did not move the turn signals.

I did flip the bags around though. The side pocket now faces front rather than rear which makes getting to stuff in and out much easier. I've had them pretty loaded and there doesn't seem to be an issue.

I just got a set of saddle bags from Carolina Leather that I think will be perfect. The bags are 770BK for $89.95. They just came in so I haven't tried to fit them on yet (having too much fun riding). The bags have hidden quick flap releases so you don't have to un-do the buckles to get into them. I plan to make my own supports so I am waiting for a couple of cooler days. The bags are well made, not so large they look like a couple of steamer trunks. The shipping was quick and reasonable. They have a small pouch on the back end of each bag and I'm pretty sure I won't have to relocate my turn signals. I may have to drill and tap holes in the chrome supports on the bike for the bag supports but I don't see any major problem. Their literature says they will fit the Suzuki LS650/S40 but nothing about having to relocate the turn signals as some other bags do.

Hi Sandy, What bags/mounts did you use?

They're the bags off my dad's old saddle (horsey type). Here're a couple of pics. I'm going to try building a set this winter. It'll be something to do during the great period of darkness.

I made the supports from a pair of diamond plate aluminum front mudflaps that go on a pickup. Just tweaked them a bit, drilled a couple of holes, and laced the bags to them. The whole rig comes off in one piece in about two seconds flat. It's just held on by the trunk being strapped down on top of it. Then I can stand them in the corner when I get inside.

I have used bags that actually look great! They are pretty big but didnt have to move anything for them to fit.(Although at first I thought I would have to,before I actually put them on)

They have the hard backs and I dont have to use saddle bag supports either.

Guess I lucked up

They also have the zip off things,so dont have to remove the whole set,just the bag/bags themselves.

Have no idea what kind they are,but I'd get the hardback type!

(I've really been so happy with them,I havent looked that close to see if there is a name on them,but I'll look closer, if there is,I'll post it.)
