plastic can't be grounded, only metal can can be grounded. That's why a gas station is such a dangerous place . It's not the gas that's bad but fumes or vapors that causes the explosion. You have people using cell phones, maybe a guy walking around with an exposed nail in the heel of his shoe or a car rolling in with a nail or screw sticking out of his tire. Now you have the possibility of a spark. How many times have you seen some dimwit smoking in a car or around the car while it's be fueled. When I drove for Ashland Chemical I got to see many safety films and believe me a chemical explosion is not a pretty site.

That's why there is so much open space at a gas station, ventilation.  I saw a video where a guy was filling gas cans in the back of his pickup.  The vapors gathered in the bed, something sparked (friction or something) and the whole pickup bed went up with him in it.  Scary!  Main thing is ventilation, allow the vapors to dissipate.

Not an endorsement just stating some facts...

plastic can conduct electricity, either by a coating or additives to the material.

And throw a lit cig into a pool of gas and the cig will go out.

But vaporize that pool and mix it with air 14:1 and I wouldn't even want to fart in the general direction of that cloud.   Shocked

You guys are seriously taking all of the fun out of my new yellow rubber gadget... Tongue  speaking of fumes, that is about where my bike is at now so I should get a chance to use the McGoofy on my way home.  With a little luck, maybe I won't blow the entire gas station up.

FWIW -- the metal tip of the gas pump's nozzle sticks out past the McCuff,  so that's where the metal nozzle should contact your metal gas tank, providing that much needed, if momentary, ground.

As for the lawnmower or boat tank -- just get it out of the vehicle and on the ground for filling.

Yup, I saw a demonstration of gasoline's explosive power at a Power Squadron boating course -- pretty impressive how much "Pop" was in just a few drops of gasoline vapor!

outstanding.  I used the McGoofy yesterday and to my surprise, I did NOT blow up the gas station!  It also worked exactly as advertised.  Stuck it on the nozzle, filled up my tank, it clicked once and had exactly the amount of gas I like to put in my tank without me having to fart around with it at all.  Call me what you will but I think it is a handy thing to have.  Of course since I am wearing a full face helmet and  riding a big single in a world full of V-twins, shorts and half-helmets I consider myself a non-conformist rider anyway.  Grin

07S40, I just gotta know...  Is that a picture of you next to all your posts?  I can't see it very clearly because of its size, but the tinfoil hat cracks me up.  We used to deal with a guy that would call 911 to report the aliens crawling through his duct work again and again.  Finally got him to wear a tinfoil hat, and that took care of them.  They couldn't track him with their scanners as long as he wore it.

Is it twice as bad when you use a plastic gas can and plastic funnel too?

That is not a picture of me.  I dug that up on a google/images search one day due to a conspiracy oriented co-worker.  I get a kick out of it too and that is why I use it.

My kid has all those episodes on DVD.  Watching Adam work his "panty static generator" trying to blow up that gasoline cracks me up every time.

Either my Arkansas education is as bad as everyone thinks it is or I just slept through this part of english class.  If I read you correctly, you stock McCuffs (now known as the McGoofy) at your Victory dealership and can't sell them to your anal Victory customers?  If that is the case, I think it is just a matter of them being too 'manly' to carry around a goofy yellow rubber gadget.   Tongue
