I found this ad . Check it out

1986 Suzuki Savage,

Asking 1700.00.

I wasn't even aware they made a 400 cc savage. Did any of you know this? Guess it's an import. There was another one for sale in New Zealand.

I did a search and found this:

Here is the link with the bike on it

The 400cc Savage used to be available in South America, Japan, Australia & New Zealand I believe ... there is a Forum Member on here (Red Wine??) from Chile with an LS400 ...

i had a gn400 81   uncle of the savage.  yes the ls400 were japaneese domestic models and other parts around the world.

got to watch the wiring on the japaneese domestic models,, bad rep for wiring burnouts.

i loved my 400  98,000 miles in over 25 years till i finally killed it.
but it lives on...  parts and pieces have made the trip over to thumper. most notably the fenders.

Is the LS 400 the same engine & everything? Looks like the same machine, with a smaller piston slinging up & down. So, is bore & stroke the difference?

I would assume so.

Not 100% sure.

My first bike was a '72 250 Savage. It was a great on/ off road bike. Rode the heck out of it on and off the road. Was a pretty baby blue in color. Wish I could find another just because. But every day my '07 gets better just turned 1K. Wink

Personally, I'd like to see a resurgence in bikes of 350 - 500 cc engines.

With gas prices now at realistic levels, compared to the rest of the world, maybe some of these models available only elsewhere will start slowly showing up here.

Really, 400cc is plenty for most uses, and who would complain about miles per gallon in the 70s?

The LS400 is or was marketed as a Savage in the countries listed in one of the other posts.  Fromwhat I gather from trying to search info on it for some time I have figured out that they share gas tanks fenders side panels foot controls seats and handle bar at least.
