Going to buy a savage

So i've decided that I'm officially in the market for a savage. I'm considering two, which I'm pretty sure are both completely stock 2001's. I asked one guy if there was any oil leak, he said no. I asked the other and he said he occasionally has to wipe a little off, but no real leaks. He also said he asked his mechanic buddy about it, who told him that most motorcycles will leak a little oil.

Is this typical? Should this be a major deciding factor between the two bikes, or did the first guy just say 'No oil leaks' and wipe a little off the side for me.

Also, how much do cheap big saddle bags and windshields go for? because they're about the same price, but one's lacking the accessories.

Is it towards the top of the head close to the header? If so that can be typical of the infamous plug leak. (check tech section)

i see he made the classic mistake of substituting motorcycle for harley davidson.

a distinction alot of non riders dont' get. to them h-d has become the name for all motorcycles. like hey go to the fridge and get me a coke, when they mean get me a soda pop.

so using that logic, all motorcyles leak a little oil.

Some do. Some brands/models are even known for it, but it doesn't mean that all do. The Savage is known for the plug leak, but it can be fixed. Personally if all other things are equal (mileage, price, appearance), I'd go for the one that didn't leak.

If one's got 'em and you like 'em, take it unless the leak is a real problem. And having put 16k miles on mine this year, lower mileage is a plus.

If it's the infamous plug leak, yes, you just seal it up and it's done. After sealing it up properly, the only time you should need to mess with it again is if you need to take the head off.

One shot deal unless the dealer removes the head. While not a walk in the park, the job is not beyond the capability of a near total klutz of a bike mechanic. If you're good, a few hours at most. Took me three days, working on and off, including a final pull of the tank to reconnect the speedometer. Roll Eyes

The instructions in the tech section are quite good.

I would consider oil leaks to be a price dropper, but not a purchase stopper.
