My 95 thumper is doing the same thing, except I end up with fuel coming out of the vent lines of the carb. Everyone that I have talked to (including myself) thinks it is a leaking needle valve and seat. My didn't do it all the time, until it got worse...now....everytime.
Cheers

The vac hose from to the petcock was dry and smelled fine, so I don't think that's an issue. Road it about 10mi last night and it ran fine, of course. Out of town this weekend, but I'll pull the carb and have a look as soon as I get a chance.

Dry vac hose and runs fine on prime?
Do you have clamps on the vac hose?
The petcock actuation by vacuum is marginal. If you're going uphill WOT the vacuum will drop enough to shut off the petcock. If you have a leak in the vac hose it may be enough to shut if off as well.

Riding the bike last night I was thinking the very same thing about WOT operation.
I ran the bike on res last night and it ran fine. The clamps are on the vac line and it fit tightly on the carb, didn't check the petcock end I guess. Hose looked to be in good shape, pliable.
So how does the petcock work at WOT? If the carb is sized right, there won't be any intake vacuum (but would be ported vacuum I think) From where the hose goes, I would guess it's looking at manifold vacuum. Very possible this carb is small for the motor and there still is a vac signal in the manifold at WOT I suppose, but that seems to be a bit of a dangerous system now that you mention it...

The slider was a little sticky, I really don't know how touchy these are. I started a separate thread about some wear on the parts.

yes - if sticky it drops too slow leaving the needle jet open too long - what year is the bike anyway?
