Mikuni VM Jetting questions
01/23/08 at 12:30:10

Hi, sorry if this has been covered to death. I'm running a 38mm Mikuni VM carb, which I know is a bit big for the Savage.

I'm hoping someone has experience jetting the 38mm carb and can give me any pointers as to what ballpark I should be looking in.

I'm fairly well versed in jetting but the jets it came with were way out of whack so I'm not sure if I should be thinking way under stock jets or close to stock?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm running a 250 main or so with my VM38 at 4k feet, cherry bomb exhaust.  still a bit rich.  a 25 or so on the pilot.  not really tuned well, but very hard to do w/ the cherry bomb.  My nedle is on the 2nd clip from the top.

Thats funny, I was thinking about putting one of those cherry bombs on there, love that sound on a car but figured it'd be too open on the savage. What's it sound like, relative to the stock pipe and the open header?

Good to know about the 250 main, that would have been quite a few steps down from stock! Got a guess what you'd run at sea level?
Thanks so much man!

Oh and another question, how did you address the cable routing under the tank? I was thinking raise the back of the tank an inch or so but is that ideal?
Thanks

Drop your main down to 200, the pilot to a 22.5 and leave the needle on the 2nd from the top.  See how that works for you.  It should get you in the ball park.

open header sounds like a machine gun...

cherry bomb will give you a headache if you stay on the throttle hard, but it sounds good.  mellow, but harsh, if that makes any sense.

I think that 250 is a bit rich anyway...

Hey TC!

I'm in Parker near Denver presently.  Busy looking for a job and writing my dissertation.  FC is not too snowy... just up there yesterday for an interview...  vroomette and I desparately want to get back to FC... that place rocks!

How have you been?

Thanks to everyone for the help.

I'm running the 200 main with a 27.5 pilot and the needle at the top clip. Idles smooth, runs smooth, no black smoke BUT.....

I can't get it to start without covering the open end of the carb with my fingers to choke off air. The choke lever on the VM38 isn't helping. What's my next step?

Thanks in advance!
