Hi Y'all!
Just bought my xmas present for myself; '87 savage. First thing I want to do is get a repair manual. Are there different ones to choose from, and where is the best place to get it? A quick perusal on the 'net got me to the Clymers, but I'm hoping there is something better.
Any advice is greatly appreciate it. This is my first real bike since I sold my dad's 305 Dream years ago. I think the savage is an awesome bike, especially for a girl. ( In fact I bought mine from another woman!)

Welcome Fellow Savage, Clymers is a very good manual for about $25 and there is the Suzuki service manual too for about $70. There is the Savage companion CD from Savage Greg here on the site. I have one and it's well worth the money for the excellent colour pictures that show you what all the giblets of your bike look like. There is also a wealth of info on this site too. If I may make a suggestion that is, before posting a question search this site especially the tech section as you will probably find your answer there. If you dont find it then post your question. There are some very knowledgeable people here and some can get grumpy LOL (joke).
anyway welcome again and congrats on the Savage its a great bike.

Factory manual's can be had on Ebay for anywhere from $20 to $50. They come up about one every two months or so.

I got my first, that only covered to '96 for $45 +S&H new still in wrapper, back in July.

Since I have an '01, I upgraded to a newer edition, covers thru '03 , used but very clean, for $23.50 w/S&H

Sorry, just sold that first manual to Rockin_John.

I caution you, there is a CD verion on Ebay for much less. I can not say how well it was scanned when they made the electronic copy. Also, I find that if I'm working on something, I like to browse thru the manual looking for something I may have missed. Seems easier to do with paper verse electronic.

I suppose original Owner's Guide would be the thing, but they don't appear very often if at all on ebay UK.

But look in the Tech Ref forum for the thread on Clymer errors. There are a few. Then correct your book. If you find an error not already listed in the Tech Ref thread, please add it.

I got tired of waiting for a used Ebay factory manual for my 96 Savage so I bought a new one for $70.00. What a waste of money. I already had the Clymer manual and it has more useful Savage info then does the F.M. The F.M. is good if you want to do a complete engine rebuild, but its way cheaper to buy a good used engine from a wreck. After reading the factory manual I got the impression there must be supplements to it that still need to be purchased. British car factory manuals are issued like that. For example, no where in the F.M. does it tell you how to take the gas tank off. Without knowing the twist and pull method, it can be a frustrating attempt. The Clymer manual tells you how to do it. Don't waste your $ on the Factory Manual, like I did.
