Three-in-one head gasket?

Since I don't have ready access to a new head gasket, I'm wondering what it's supposed to look like.

The one that came off my '87 was three identical pieces of metal connected together through two seperate holes and seemingly glued together with what appeared to be black RTV or something of the like. And then the whole mess (head to jug) looked like it was RTV'd together as well.

The last time I changed a head gasket was on a '64 Chevy 454...

So, is that what a new one looks like?

I guess what I asking is do I clean it off, apply more sealant, and torque away?

No No, it is not considered reasonable to re-use compressed gaskets over. Save yourself the time and trouble of doing the job again by getting a new gasket and o-rings and RTFM. Read the factory manual or Clymers or the tech section here for specs. Max

I used to read Shakespeare for fun, but Clymers usually makes my head hurt. It seems like the information you need is not in the section you'd think it should be in and when found, said information is vague. Or wrong.

I need to get the SSM...

But thanks! All the other head gaskets I've ever replaced were fiber with metal rings around the cylinders. Never seen one that was all metal.

The new head gasket is punched out a little all around and on the two outside pieces, with the center piece being flat.  This is so when installed it will crush down and make a good seal.

Most motorcycle head gaskets are designed this way...and you never reuse them.

Thanks for the link.

After Lancer exlained it, I was slapping my forehead... somewhere in the dark recesses of my brain, I knew how metal gasket worked.

Sometimes, I'm a doofus.
