Newbie Questions?
10/18/07 at 13:54:18

Greetings all from the Sunshine state. Great site, which answered already a lot of my questions.
Just bought a 2006 S40 with only 1600 miles all stock.
Noticed that there is a loose hose coming out from under the tank on the right side and an empty nipple on the carburator. The hose fit perfectly on the nipple, but when I connected it the bike will stall and not start but will run fine without the hose. Looking at the carb diagram I found here I believe it's the bowl vent hose but am not sure. It looks like there are two vent hoses on the left and right side of the carb.
My question: is the hose supposed to be loose or connected and what does it do exactly? Should I be conncerned not having it connected?

Also noticed that next to the neutral light in the other corner seems to be another light. Is it used for anything?

Thank you

Markus

Easy one first.
That light on the speedo doesn't do anything.

On the carb:
You have 2 connectors on EACH side of the carb.
The high one on each side is a vent.  The other end of those hoses are open.
The low one on the choke knob (left) side is the fuel line from the petcork.
The low one on the right side is the vacuum line to the petcork.

Does that  help?

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

Would have to look at it again.
Like I said right now it is not connected and runs fine.

Let's see if I am understanding you properly.

On one side of the carb you have a hose hooked up but goes nowhere, on the other side of the carb there is a nipple without a hose. You tried to connect the hose from one side to the other side, and by doing this the bike won't run?

If I am understanding what you are saying correctly, what is missing is the hose for the other side. Those hoses connecting to those nipples are vent lines and are open at the ends. They run under neath the seat and connect to nothing except where they are connected to the carb.

You should probably take the tank off and varify where those hoses are coming from, it gets tricky without pictures.

My guess is that one of the vent hoses is missing.
If he did try to connect the one vent hose to the other vent it means they couldn't vent. Maybe that's why it stalled.

Hello All.

Did some more investigating last night and followed the loose hose. It is actually connected to the nipple on the left side. So when I put the hose on, I directly connected conected the right and left nipple. May be I should just put another short piece of hose on the free nipple, if it is just used for venting?

That's the way to do it.

the end of the vent hose just goes up into a hole in the frame.

Mystery solved.
Will just put a short piece of hose on that nipple.

Thank you.
