New Kendas and $5 temp gauge (pics)

HI EVERYBODY!

Yup, not a typo, I installed a $5 temp gauge on the savage Grin

It's actually a $4.99 Deep-Fry thermometer secured w/wire to cooling fins, hehe.
But does it work? Yes. It's not German precision engineering exactly but it works. When bike is cold it messures current local temp (usually between 65-85fh in my region: Southern CA) and after engine has been running for a while it reads about 160-170° (up to 180-190° in summer stop-and-go traffic) needle goes in about 5 inches.
Pretty handy and a steal for 5 bucks!

Next: "Nasty" gets new shoes!

New set of Kenda K-657 Sport Challenger. Oversized rear and not really a cruiser rubber, it does the job and does it well. I went in the store cash in hand planning to buy a set of Dunlop 404's or 491's but no go, they were all too big or too small and all they had was a beautiful set of Elite III's which I could not afford so I took these instaed, so far (300miles) I'm am pleased.

Good on gravel, great curve huggers, mayor improvement from stock pos.
Fatter/taller tire does not rub at all, by a full 1/4" (may I add) hehe.
Size rear: 140/90/15 Price: $37.99 on sale @ Cycle Parts West, San Diego.

Good control, secure grip & cornering.
Size front: 100/90/19 Price: $32.99 on sale @ Cycle Parts West, San Diego.

Jetting update.

Bike doing fine after 500 miles since the .160 main jet mod. Goes great with no-baffle "megaphone" pipe mod; no noticeable extra gas consumption and very powerful after 65mi/h (top speed about 90). Running a bit rich but on the good side it makes a pretty blue flame that amuses my girlfriend every time that I turn the engine off.

Cheerios!

With a hand held IR temp meter, my head running 240°F after a long hot run.

So while it works, it may not be indicating true temp.

240°?   Sounds about right for a really hot air cooled head and that's why it's a good idea to go synthetic people since it can withstand up to 400° without turning into tar.

And about my 180° hot head ...well of course, makes sense, this thing is only stuck between the hot fins and not inside the block so yes,  the true reading is incorrect.

However it messures a steady 180° when hot, so if it ever climbs up to 200° or more then I know something is wrong and should be checked asap.  Anyway, works for me!

Just good ol' mad mechanic math, oops, forgot a point there; and yes that refers to milimiters, japanese bike.

For this I used a 1/16" precision metal drill bit which equals:
1.5875mm or .0625"

The stock jet is usually a #145 ( 1.45mm or .0571")

See drill bit size chart here:
