Exhaust Wrap

I've heard so many conflicting stories about wrapping the exhaust. Does it really cause damage to the pipe? What are the pros and cons? I just like the way it looks and wonder if it's worth the trouble.

i have exhaust wrap on my chopper, it was cool for awhile but it's time for a change. it is true about it damaging your pipes, it holds the heat in.if you do it soak it in water first and you'll need more than you think. it smells really bad at first, kinda like burnt butterscotch, and every time it gets wet there after. and the reason i originally put it on my chop was to hide the crappy welds.

How was your pipes damaged? Did you end up replacing the pipes? How long before the damage?

Thanks,
Jim

mine haven't been damaged as of yet, but on automobile headers, the metal gets brittle and cracks as time goes by. every application is different. motorcycle headers are thicker, so i would assume they would last longer.haven't changed them yet.

It blued the hell out of my header and when it gets wet, the steam stinks.
