So I backed it out...a little too far, and I lost it. I need to find a replacement. Anybody know what thread size/pitch to use? I have an '87 LS650

Got it. Looks like I lost the spring and O-ring as well. Funny thing, I plugged the hole with a piece of electrical tape just to get the bike moving and the darn thing runs better than ever. No pops, quick starts...I wouldn't tout this as a "mod" and I'll definitely get the replacement parts, but it's kind of tempting to find a more permanent sort of plug instead of a new screw/spring/etc.

Taping or pluggin the hole sounds like the equivalent to about 3+ turns out on the screw. If it runs well at that point, you may need to increase the pilot jet a notch or two. This will allow you to reset the idle mixture screw to about 1.5 to 2 turns out. Prevents loss of the screw.

May be the new test to see if you need to increase the pilot. If it runs rich, then no, if it runs better, then the pilot is too lean.  Undecided

The pilot screw runs the bike thru approx 1/4 throttle.  So, the "running real rich" will be at idle or slow speeds.

Theat means that if you lugg the engine or if you shift early ( owner manuals suggested speeds), you'll find out the effect of "real rich".  IF you whine it out or keep it in the higher RPM's,  you may never found out what carbon will do to the plug.

Carbon fouled plug will start to miss & the bike will seem like a bucking horse.   I suggest you keep a spark plug in the tool pouch until you get a new screw, spring & washer (about $10 )

DPR8EIX-9 (NGK) or IX24B (Denso) Both are iridium.

Now that was out of left field.

Well.....I didnt mean to interrupt the post but had been wondering on this.....

and I think it was TMack who said "in this topic" to carry a spark plug with you...

So why is it out of left field to ask what is the best one to use???

Besides when I ask a question I am usually also thinking of  other people and what they may want to know also.

Thanks Clive for answering Smiley

First, please try not to be offended.  It was a comment, not a chastisement and no offense was intended.  However, since you ask...

In a thread on the idle mixture screw, recommended electrical parts questions are basically out of left field.  The comment by T-Mack was an aside to the original poster's rich running condition, suggesting he carry a spare if he chooses to run the bike rich because of likely fouling.  Topic hijacking has become a pet pieve of mine, though I'm guilty of it often enough to piss myself off.  While very common, makes it difficult for someone else to find useful information based on the title of a thread.  It's probably a moot point anyway since it seems only a few people read existing information, so I'm just tilting at windmills.

A couple of topics to help you with your query:

Tech Ref Forum Topic on Spark Plug Conversion

What difference does the iridium plug make?

Edit: I placed a link on the second topic in the Tech ref thread.

Back to the idle mixture screw....

I was backfiring and burping flames after an HD muffler install.  I then backed the idle screw out another turn as suggested on some threads here.  On my way home, just after adjusting it, I was literally shooting flames out.

My analysis was that I was running rich before the adjustment and now I am running REALLY rich in order to get more flames.  I assume I should turn the idle screw in?  The flames only occur when I am coming off throttle.

Do the spacer mod and rejet with a 55 pilot. Then readjust the air mix screw. JMHO.

Opportunities multiply as they are seized.
No spacer,60 pilot jet, 155 main jet, plug door, sportster muffler, k&n drop in, iridium plug, brake pedal mod,de-badged, Dunlops, bullet turn signals.
