Riser question
10/03/07 at 10:27:02

I have an 87 Savage that I acquired in a partial trade about two nights ago. Having spent a few hours unbolting about 40 lbs in luggage, unnecessary chrome, passenger gear etc, I've decided that ramming my elbows into my knees is neither a comfortable nor safe riding position. Therefore I'm ditching the stock buckhorns in favor of a set of pullback drag bars.

Since the new bars will require taller risers, I was wondering if it's an ok idea to drill out the holes in steel cups on the rubber bushings to 5/8 to fit the bigger bolts for one of my 3 sets of leftover HD risers? I don't see how this would affect the structural integrity, but maybe somebody else does.

The only issue would be going back to stock.

These are cheap parts, have at it.

Alright, then. It'll be done tonight. Stock? There's no going back now! Though I will keep the stock fender/tallight assembly for when I get the inevitable California Fixit Ticket for a sparto taillight and no blinkers.

B...B... But wait a minute!  Harley risers only use 1/2" bolts! Why go with a hole 1/8" larger? That's allowing too much slop. I know, I've done a few of these myself. I just use a 1/2" drill bit, then clean/debur the hole a bit with a round file, and get a nice tight fit.
