I'm broke, yo!

I have an 87 Savage that I acquired in a partial trade about two nights ago. Having spent a few hours unbolting about 40 lbs in luggage, unnecessary chrome, passenger gear etc, I've decided that ramming my elbows into my knees is neither a comfortable nor safe riding position. Therefore I'm ditching the stock buckhorns in favor of a set of pullback drag bars.
Since the new bars will require taller risers, I was wondering if it's an ok idea to drill out the holes in steel cups on the rubber bushings to 5/8 to fit the bigger bolts for one of my 3 sets of leftover HD risers? I don't see how this would affect the structural integrity, but maybe somebody else does.
