Such a small tooh change should be able to be comensated in the belt tightener.

I imagine that one reason the Savage40 hasn't changed in price since at least 2000, is because they haven't had a lot of engineers trying to reinvent the bike.

That's left for the enthusiast to do.

Gee, just imagine buying a more expensive bike like the C90. You'd never have anything to do except for installing "factory" parts and goodies. What's the challenge in that?

If you added to the diameter of the front pulley, I doubt it would fit in the rather tight guard. If you change the rear pulley by enough to matter (3-4 teeth) I think you will get out of range of the axle's tension adjusters.

As previously mentioned, just increasing the diameter of the rear tire can make a noticeable difference in the highway gearing. However, as for gas mileage, I don't think my 99 with the bigger 140/90 rear tire gets any better mileage than my 87 with the stock 140/80 on it. But that may be entirely due to carb jetting or other factors.

I have been thinking about this. Our belts appear to be made by Gates. If this is the case, I can get just about any pulley I need and the belt to make up for the smaller pulley. Over the next few months, I am planning to purchase a smaller pulley and get it machined to fit the bolt pattern. When I get this finished, I will let everybody know how it works. I am an engineer and use the Gates Polychain drives all of the time, I also have access to a machine shop.

Without going to a shorter belt, not very much. I will have to do some calculations before I will know exactly how many teeth I am going to try to take out of the rear sprocket.

It will not be a very quick process, I am really swamped at work right now and don't have much time to work on it. Once things even out a little I will have some time to figure out what is what.

That has to be a pretty big change; because just the 3% up gearing of going from a stock 140/80 IRC to a 140/90 Dunlop makes a slightly noticeable difference.
