Additions to FS Maintenance Schedule
09/10/07 at 14:52:14

With the help of some of our experts out there, I think it would be nice to collect some additional recommendations for part and system inspections to help our new owners avoid some catastrophic failures. These are areas that Clymer's and FSM don't mention.

In my experience I would check

Stock Brake Pads:
Due to short life of stock brake pads I would recommend checking them between 2500 and 3000 miles to check the wear rate and keep the backing plates out of the rotors.

Cam Chain Tensioner:
Pobably ought to check tensioner and cam chain slack around 7-8,000 miles.

Header/Exhaust Pipe Bracket:
Check tightness of bracket bolts approx 1500 - 2000 miles.

Engine Mounting Bolts:
Check for tightness approx 2000-3000 miles.

I am sure there are some others areas that should be checked to prevent failures.

I would recommend checking the Tensioner extention every 5k miles.  Failures have occured as early as 8k and as late as 31k.  Take measurement of the plunger extention and you'll be able to estimate the mileage for maintenance.

And check all fasteners for tightness every 2k.   Grin
