Wife's paint finished!!!
09/02/07 at 16:48:30

FINALLY!!!

I parked the bike late last fall.
She hadn't ridden since last October.
Earlier in the spring I pulled it apart because she wanted "BABY BLUE FLAMES".
Ran into some problems with the paint.

I finally stripped ALL the parts down to BARE METAL!!

I used ALL RATTLE CANS!!
Duplicor paints from O'Rielly's Auto Parts.
Truck, Van and SUV paint.
1. Gray sandable heavy fill formula Primer
2. Universal Black
3. Bahama Blue
4. Clear Effex
5. Clear Coat.

I got the flames in the following way...
1. Flamed Swim shorts, Flamed Highwaiian Shirt, Flamed womens swim suit sarong.
2. Laid them out on the table
3. Traced the flames I wanted with tracing paper and a pencil.
4. Taped the tracing paper to poster board.
5. Cut out with an exacto knife
PRESTO home made and re-usable flame patterns!!!

Roughed up the metal with 600 Scuff pads.
Wiped down with Duplicolor prep pads
MULTIPLE coats of Primer and sanded with 600.
Prep pads
MULTIPLE coats of Black.
Laid out 3 inch wide masking tape on the the parts.
Used the patterns and Sharpie traced the the flame patterns onto the tape. SOME creativity was needed to connect, lengthen, and position the flames.
LIGHT running the razor blade to cut out the flames.
Mask off the rest of the black.
Back masked the reverse flames on the front and rear fender. CREATIVITY
Multiple coats of Bahama Blue on the flames.
Removed all the tape.
Took the tank to a local pin striper for the white flame outlined.
Clear Effex over the whole thing a few coats.
ALOT of coats of clear!!!
1500 Wet sanded. Had a few spots that needed some attention!! Fly foot prints, dust, etc
Heavy coat and rub down with Mother's paste style wax.

OH BTW... did I say this was all Rattled cans AND... ready for this...
a folding card table in my front yard!!!
I would put the parts and paint out in the yard in the shade before work at 0830. Come home at lunch and paint. 10-15 minute flash times between coats. Leave in the yard until I get home at 1700 then more coats. Dry and cure a day or 2. Then do the prep work for the next step. and repeat!

Dee's name was added on top of the clear coat the other day. This way a little soft sanding and re-wax can get it sold in the future!

All total was under $200. Well the pinstripe cost me $250! MORE than ALL the work I did alone!

Hope you like them!
Next step is the seat!
Rode the poker run this weekend and that is a real head turner!

Aloha,
Want to fly over to Kauai and do mine as well!!!!
I absolutely love it! Maybe one of these days when I have too much time on my hands I might attempt something like that too.
I'm thinking about roses however, in shades of dusty rose, instead of flames.

Already had ALOT of people asking me to do work for them!

MAYBE I will start doing rattle can paint jobs!

I need to send it to Dupli Color and see if I can get them to send me a HUGE selection of paints for the house!

Wait till you see MY BIKE!!

I am in the process of doing the Duplicolor CHROME colors! They have Chrome, Red, Blue, Green, Purple, Orange and a couple others!
They also have Specal colors in the Blue and Red Chrome!
I have to figure out the scheme and then start!
I am starting with doing the rim to my truck in the red chrome FIRST!

We'll see!

Excellent Job !!!

And very fine guidelines, I will definitely be taking notes.

Flames just look sooooo good, I was thinking about using air brush technique but now...hmmm...Dennis

How did you strip the parts down to bare metal?
What would you use if there were rust spots on the metal?
I also painted my tank, fenders, and side caps, but I only sanded the previous paint lightly. All went well. Did 6 coats of metallic blue (also a can), and another 4 coats of clear coat.
Unfortunate;y I did not research the available clear coat paints, and I ended up buying the wrong kind. I found out the minute I filled up my gas tank and spilled gasoline on the tank. The clear coat dissolved!
So now I need to redo all the work  :'(
It'll have to wait a while though!!

Kelley Moore paint store has a product calle Ospho. It is a dilute phosphoric acid & turns iron oxide into iron phosphate, so it chemically transforms the rust 7 it is no longer rust. Only works one layer deep, so, gotta clean any flakes out, but no one is gonna let their bike rust as deeply as to make flakes. Its cheap, easy to use. I keep a quart around for general purposes. The gel wasnt very good, I like the liquid a lot better.

Never hears of Kelly more, but will check at Home Depot or other paint places. Maybe Wal-Mart might have it. (the biggest store on the island!

I used ZIP-STRIP and some other brand that I bought off the shelf at O'Rielly's.

Spray on, wait 10 minutes, Hit with the Car wash pressure washer. Tough areas require an added spray and then maybe a scrape from a plastic putty knife.

Make sure you rinse it all REALLY GOOD!!
Then RINSE AGAIN!!!
