shock settings & tire pressures
09/01/07 at 20:19:07

Evenin all, my bike is stock.  And a trip down old rte 66 was (to put it mildly) uncomfortable.  Granted the road isn't in the best shape & i'm going to ship off the seat shortly to have it customized which should make it far better.  But I also thought i'd check tire pressure & the settings on the shock absorbers since I haven't altered them since I bought the Savage.  It's a 2002 by the way.

So my question to all of you is what shock setting & tire pressure do ya'll use?  Thanks!

Recommended tire pressure is on the pper belt guard on mine, the rear shocks have a preload adjustment in the bottom seat. There is a series of cams that you turn with the back end of the tool kit screwdriver handle. You can watch the spring seat lower or raise I'm running one from the top, depends on your weight and accessories. This is more difficult and harder to see if you have saddle bags as they are in the way. Believe the Owners Manual has directions and pictures. Max

I did check the manual.  I got how to adjust the shocks but all it said about the settings was that 1 is the softest & 5 is the stiffest.  I think i'll just put it in the middle & see what's different.  thanks

I'd go up one knock at a time.

About the only advantage you're going to find is that it will stop bottoming out.  And the big bumps you still need to jump.

240# and the 5th setting was too stiff.  4th is just fine.

My shocks must have been set on high (no idea what number) cause if I don't lift my but of the seat (like horse riding) when going over a speed bump my teeth will definitely slam together. Not to mention what it does to my back and neck.

Thanks guys, you're right.  It's probably smarter to bring it up one setting at a time.  I'll drop it back down one & see what happens.  I'd moved it up two, but haven't had a chance to ride since I did that.
