Well, I had my bike apart again this morning.  This time, I was putzing with the carb.

I had the intention of re-jetting and adding a k&n cone filter direct to the intake.

I was thinking of a 152.5 main and a 55 pilot with the k&n cone.

BUT:

When I went to the stealership, I was disappointed that they had nothing that I wanted.  They had a 155 main, but it was a narrow head.  They were out of narrow head 55 pilots too.  Neither did they carry any of the k&n products.  (sucky service department.  They never have anything in stock!)

So that leads me to ask the question. Is it really worth the money and time to tweak the carb beyond stock (without benefit of changing the exhaust)?

If so, where can I get the part numbers or the parts?

Whether or not you need more power depends on what you want to do on the motorcycle.  How bad to you want to be?

I'm pretty happy with stock! Good mileage and performance... but I'm not running other bikes off the line or trying to hit a ton.

i don't know that I really want any more power...  I just like wrenching on stuff!

That said, I managed to find a 55 pilot jet and installed it earlier tonight.

That by itself made a HUGE difference!

I already did the white spacer mod and it improved ther throttle response and nearly eliminated the cold-start surging that everyone laments.

Well, with the 55 pilot jet, the cold-start surging is gone.  Bye Bye.  So is the 1-2 back-fire as well as the 'honey, i'm home' backfire when I shut the bike off.

Still,  I want to wrench on it.  

Say i get the 152.5 main jet and the K&N cone filter.  Are there any drawbacks to that? (does it bog down in wet weather riding?)  What will the larger main do to my gas mileage.

Keep in mind, I'm not racing the bike and rarely spend much time above 65mph.  

That said, does anyone have the k&n part number for the cone filter that will fit?

(I think I'm going to get me a sportster exhaust in the near future, so these teaks should be beneficial, no?)

Since wrenching to produce less power/ridability is kinda stupid you don't have much choice, eh?

Unless you start pushing excessive fuel thru the system, your mileage will not suffer.    The two main killers of fuel mileage are wind resistance (goes up with the square of the speed) and how often you run WOT.

What is the OD" on the filter side of the stock carb?
Is it 57mm?

it doesnt really need more power. If you wanna faster cruiser, then get one. But the savages are easy enough to tweek a little. So if its not actualy the power ur after just the hobbie, then go for it

What if you want a faster cruiser while keeping under 400 pounds wet?  Not all of us are up to muscling 500-600 pounds.
