New guy with a question - Chevy 350 Piston

Hi guys, I'm the new guy here today and I have a question. I've stumbled across a 1987 Savage that has been bored out to fit a 350 Chevy piston in it. I haven't looked at or heard this bike in person yet, but I was considering it. Before I even waist my time on it, is this a common "upgrade" done or is this some hillbilly engineering? (no offense meant to any of the hillbilly persuasion Grin

)

I don't think so. The stock bore and stroke of the Savage is 94mm = 3.70 inches.

A 350 Chevy has a 4" bore ('cept for the '89-'95, "LT5", in "ZR1" Corvette 32-valve DOHC which has a 3.9" bore.) I seriously doubt that there is .15" of excess cylinder wall that you could remove and still have a working engine.

Possibles would be pistons from a 305 @ 3.736", a 265 ('55-'57 OR '94-'96) @ 3.75", or a gen-III 293 or 325 Vortec @ 3.779" -- 0.036, 0.05, and 0.079 overbore. But given the varibles as the shape of the top of the piston and pin size and placement I would tend to doubt that anyone is running a Chevy piston in a Savage.

What is the bore of a 350 small block cylinder in mm?

It has 43.75 ci, so just shy of a 10% increase...but what is the bore/stroke?

OK, bore is 4.0" == 101.6mm

No need for a small block piston, since a Dr650 can be had in a 101mm oversize...even a 103mm is available.
The only problem is that for that size bore the stock cylinder liner would need to be replace with a larger one to accomodate the increased size, which requires the machining of the cases to accept the larger liner, and that machining would interfer with the long cylinder
studs which are anchored in the case.

No, I don't have pictures. I have seen this Savage posted in Craigslist in Dallas before and I saw it again before I posted this message tonight. I'm starting to think that it was a BS listing since it's already gone. Thanks for the input though guys. I'm going to be keeping my eye out for a Savage in the future as a second bike for my garage.

Just put a factory oversized piston in mine (+0.5mm).

I think there's more than just the cylinder wall to worry about. Most likely the wrist pin will be different which means the connecting rod would need mod's. Then there's the piston skirt to worry about, don't want to bang on anything when it's on the bottom.

There is cylinder & piston on Ebay right now. If the bike is cheap enough..........(fill in the blank)

Engineers design things, Technicians make them work.
