Hi I have a 1987 model, and have a problem which I have been trying to figure out since I bought the bike.

The bike starts off smoothly, and idling is perfect, but when I'm riding (using top gears) and press the clutch to lower down the gears, the engine just dies.

I have changed the air filter, cleaned the carb + jets but bike is still the same.

Can anyone help please! ??? ??? ???

Reply #1 - 07/31/07 at 09:02:59 Does the bike accelerate ok? Does it restart when you let out the clutch (like push starting only at speed)? And if it restarts, does it have power or is it weak?

Reply #2 - 07/31/07 at 09:53:23 check the idle speed with a tach if you have one. If the idle speed is too low, shutting the throttle from a high rpm will cause the rpm to dip lower than normal. If your idle is too low, then it will die. If you don't have a tach, set the idle a little higher and see what happens.

Very easy to turn the idle down to 600-800 rpm where the bike sounds really cool idling; then it will do this.

Hi, thank you all for answering!

The bike accelarates just superbly, and this thing of the bike dying out on me only happens when I'm trying to lower down the speed to change gears and use the clutch. When this happens I restart the bike whilst still moving so I don't have to stop, but obviously at times this is a bit dangerous.

However I will try to set the idling a bit higher and see what happens.

Sounds to me that the bike is running too rich.
If I am correct, You will be able to duplicate the problem when the bike is in "N". You will be able to kill the bike just by revving it up and closing the trottle instanteneously. I deaal with simillar problems on a regular bases.
If this is correct, You have couple of solutions, but all of them lean-up the mixture.
1. Go to slightly thicker white spacer
2. readjust the idle screw to the point where it just starts to lean-misfire and back it up about 1/4 turn.
This should do it
