OK - where's this from then?

My Savage is stripped down - I've sent the frame off to be powder coated.  So, got the gasket set - taking various bits off to helicoil stripped threads etc.
Now, imagine my surprise when I crack open the crankcase cover to replace the gasket and check the much discussed cam chain tensioner - first it's almost popping out!  (This despite it's former owner telling me it has had a new camchain and parts) Looks as if I'll have to replace or modify the tensioner and/or chain. (Has anybody gone into production yet?)
However - more disturbing, is the finding of a small rod in the bottom of the crankcase - it's approx 1cm long by 3mm diameter - where the hell has that come from?  Any ideas?

Possibly the locating pin for the upper cam chain sprocket.  May have been dropped in by previous owner and replaced wthout the original being retrieved. Part number 3 in this diagram

More likely the cam sprocket alignment pin.

The oil pump pin is shorter.

I wonder where he dropped it but couldn't find it?

Hey guys - thnks for the pointers - I'll be taking the head off soon (L130 stripped bolt to be helicoiled - and some of the other fastners are stripped) so I'll have to dismantle the cam chain to do that - I'll have a good look around to see where it's from and let you know.

So, it's about 3/8" long x 1/8" diameter?

Couldn't be out of the tensioner itself (though I can't imagine how)?  Does the tensioner have all it's parts?

Er.. I think you'll find that is what I said probably was.  I made no mention of the oil pump and the diagram I linked to is of the camshaft and its sprocket - item 3 is the part in question

I've been in there messing around, tho not with the oil pump. If I was gonna look anywhere, I would look right where the Doc said. Gonna have to to fix the chain anyway. It's not exactly dangerous yet, but it's looking like time to do it. Will you be considering having the new chain cryogenically treated?I intend to on the next one, but I did at least soak it for a couple O days, si it never was dry.

Yep - it was the cam sprocket alignment pin - and I also found out why!  There was no locking washer on the two upper sprocket bolts!  So there was absolutely no way it was going to stay up there!  I DREAD to think where/what damage that could have done!
Looks as if the previous owner did a sloppy job of putting it back together - I've noticed only two of the head bolts had copper washers as well - and I suspect some of the alignment dowels are missing from the head cover and one from the head to cylinder.  Oh well - too tired just now - I'll inspect again in daylight and get the relevant bits on order.
Thanks for the info - well spotted!
