spacer and idle mixture
05/10/07 at 19:59:59

In reading the tech posts, It seems to be the case that fixing the backfire will give better performance but less MPG.  Is this correct?

and is there a fix that does not reduce MPG?

Any substitutes for a slide hammer?

and does anyone have stock pipe/airbox with this spacer/screw modification?

Thanks

In a '95 I have the 1/2 white spacer, ~2 turns out on te mixture,a 152.5 mainjet, stock pilot, stock airfilter/airbox, and a jardine pipe, no backfires and a steady 52-54mpg.

Grim, from what I've seen around here, go with a 1/2 spacer and no main jet change.  You may not even notice any MPG drop, but will notice a performance increase.

petc0ck mod, white spacer removed, 150 main jet, 12.5" shocks, 16" turnout muff, oil cooler mod, chain conversion, Tkat brace, external fuel filter, fuel screen removed...

Properly setting the mixture to correct for the factory lean condition should also extend the life of the engine by reducing the operating temp.

...I wonder... if this might be related to the cam chain issues on the more recent models. Just maybe, leaning out the engines in recent model years to show voluntary compliance with EPA regs has had an unintended consequence.

...just thinking out loud here.

They've been lean since at least '96.
