Wiggly noisy speedo?
04/24/07 at 14:29:58

A new noise started today and I was wondering if you all had any thoughts.

I can hear what sounds like a small loose bolt chattering somewhere in the front when I am riding (which is a LOT now that the weather is finally warm).

Nothing obvious upon inspection. So I tried putting my hand on things as I was riding to see what was moving and making noise. The clutch lever was a little off and noisy. I tightened that up during one break, and checked all other front end bolts during the bank run.

When I went to the accountant a few minutes ago, I put my hand over the speedo, and found it moves a little (circularly) and the noise stopped when I pressed on it.

I cannot see anything to tighten on that item, which is stock. Hmmm...any ideas on what to do next?  Undecided

this si a pretty classic problem for the saveg.  I do not recall the fix as I don't care about it on my bike.  Try using the search feature...  look in the tech sect... also, removing the tank is fairly easy, and you can get at the reatining bolts there...

search "speedometer rattle"

Yep - some speedo's start to rattle - need to pull the seat and a drained fuel tank to fix it from the underside of the tank

it's up to you!  it's just a rattle...

pulling the tank is fairly easy...

pull rider seat (2 bolts near back of seat, under it).

two more bolts at front of seat to loosen tank.  remember the order of the parts.

set petc0ck to ON or RES, not PRI.  remove two hoses going to fuel petc0ck from carb

disconnect speedo drive cable.  Do not loose rubber oring.

now it may or may not be tricky.

lift rear of tank a little, pull backwards, and rotate the tank so that the right side of the tank is coming up. keep pulling back.  This part of the procedure is a little different for everyone as the frames vary a bit from bike to bike...

Disconnect electrical connector.

tank is off.

set to petcock to PRI to drain gas.

fix rattle.

reinstall tank & seat.  add gas.  ride.

yes - but it'll likely start to bug you - really draining the tank and removal isn't real bad - and besides you might as well re-jet and sand down the white spacer while your there Smiley

getting the stock carb out, witht he batt box, and air tube, now that's a pain, IMO!  I did it twice.  Then it was F this, where's my grinder and new pod filter?

Much better.

I don't even bolt my tank on anymore... I can take it off in under a minute.  w/o taking my seat off...

if you're cafefull, you don't need to drain tank.  but wait till it's low at least.  and don't turn it all the way over.

Just have on hand something to plug the fuel line, mine leaks abit even when off.  A big screw driver will do, not a regular one, A BIG ONE. Or a 1/4" shaft or a little bigger.  I use the spark plug wrench lever.   Grin

don't need to pull the carb to jet it or do the white spacer - just pull the tank and seat - me i never pull the tank full - you just take the fuel line off the carb and stick it in a 5gal fuel can go have a beer and the tank is drained.

I did find the speedo rattle previous posts (holy cow - I am NOT alone!!) Thanks for the help there.

And I just turned the odom over to 2000 miles today! 8)
(which means i've put 1,825 miles on this baby since Sept 06...and many more to come!)

I don't think it works that way - some dude in a parking lot work on his motorcycle is likely not going to attract a bevy of ladies  Undecided  however the inverse is going to work every time unless the guys are brain dead Wink
