If the tank isn't empty, no biggeee, just stand it on the end that goes under the seat & lean it in a corner, set it on something that wont slide & wont scratch it. old piece of carpet fits the bill. IF you can get your hands on some of the insulation that comes with a window unit air conditioner, it is about 1/16th thick, 1" wide & has adhesive on one side, black foamy stuff, I cut it to fit under the black plastic that the speedo is housed in. That little bit of soft stuff insulated the speedo from the vibes enough to stop the rattling/buzzing completely.If you have the speedo in your hands & a good blade in an X-Acto, it's a piece O cake. I havent looked at Lowes, but there may be some kind O weatherstrip available that's not so thinck that it would look messy. The stuff I used is not noticeable at all. Ohh, I tried ignoring the rattle & just riding it,, didnt work long at all..

I have various sorts of that on hand, and all of it is prone to breaking down when exposed to fuel, even the fumes.

Reply #18 - 04/25/07 at 05:09:03 I did mine long enough ago I cant remember just when it was, I know it was last summer, cuz we bought the air conditioner. I overfill & create leaks often & have no issue with the foam breaking down. Its soft, like you say, I guess its never gotten straight gas on it & not enough fumes to hurt it.

Why would you have to drain it anyway? I just get a small dribble in a rag when I pull the hose off...with the petc0ck turned to ON, that is... Tongue

I used to drain it because it was easier to handle empty, then I quit and just took the fuel line apart at the inline filter and let both ends drain into a soup can for a few seconds before removing the tank. Now I just use the QD.

Some folks have slight variations in the frame that won't allow them to get the tank off. I used to drain & remove the petrooster because I couldnt do it, then someone posted how & I managed by the narrowest margin. I have to slap on the throttle side( rightside) of the rear end of the tank after raising it & dragging it back a bit, to clear the frame & that isnt complete, it has scratched the frame up some, but I can't see it when it's all together, so it's not really scratched,, right? That, & oiling the rubbers under the tank helped, too. Sure hope the oil doesnt adversely affect the rubber cushions

A simple and honest answer...and I was just giving you a hard time.

The tank is a pain in the butt when full. Especially if you need to look at the bottom Tongue

Use TRV's method or my silicone rubber squirt technique and "fogetaboutit". Good to go.

It's obnoxious, the dealer is no help, but my fix is going on 5 years now just fine.

Another silly Savage Thumper trait, all 'cuz of a spring mounted speedo.

What are the springs for anyway? A speedo on the handlbars ain't got no springs. BZZZZZZ...bzzzzz....

If I had had the shrink tubing handy & the washers I woulda gone their way. Cutting that insulation down to make it fit was a pain. But, I had the stuff just layin there & it LOOKed like it would do the job, so I gave it a try & am satisfied with the results. But, should it ever fail, I wouldnt go to that effort again. Radio shack & some heat shrink would be in my future.. Silicone stuff is always here.. & thats a good answer to a bothersome little Buzzz. I just used what I had available,
