Update with pics

I recently did a tear down and rebuild of the savage, read cam chain, and chain conversion. I have a 96 that started out bright yellow, with 14500.

While I was in there I decided to do the plug leak fix, spark plug door mod, moved the battery back about 3-5 inches, rerouted some wiring, took off the kickstand switch and bypassed, shimmed the clutch springs. I also went up to a 155 in the carb.

Prior to this tear down I took her apart, I tinker alot, and did some body work and repainted her. I reshaped and recovered the seat, removed the pillon and sissy bar, bondo'd the holes in the fender and then painted it a color changing paint.

At this point I don't think I can get any more ponies out of her without some serious mods like Lancer and Greg are doing. so that'll have wait I just don't have the time. SHe is getting close to the look i want.

TODO: fab forward controls.
         paint cobra style racing stripes.
         change bars to drag style
         replace front running lights/blinkers
put in a front drive speedo to comp for the chain conversion.
         New grips and controls

Thanks to everyone on the site for all of your hints, tips, suggestions, and wisdom, My scoot rocks because of it. After all of these mods she is truely custom.  Grin

You can see the change in color depends upon how you view it.

Here the bracket that i fabbed, you can see that it moves the battery back between 3-5 inches. I  haven't measured it. It's bolted to one of the chain guard tabs, and to the original brackets

Thank you all again,

I'll post updates here as she comes along. I'll have more this week when I get her completely put back together.

Hey, Man...She's looking good!

I like the Green paint, Pod filter, Battery moved, airbox removed.  Looks familiar...as they say, imitation is the best form of flattery Tongue

Can't you find a replacement for that breather hose?.  I used the stock hose with the K&N breather filter.  That water hose is....well, er, ah, Shocked

How about the ignition unit?  Got any plans for that?

I LOVE THAT CHAIN DRIVE!!!  DAMM NICE.  I gotta hurry up and do that...so that I can be like you Tongue

I plan on shimming the springs when I do the cam chain. How thick did you go? Steel or aluminum? Did you make the shims or buy washers? Looks like just a thin shim will make a decent change since it would lift the spring out of that slight pocket. I am not worried about coil binding the springs. I don't see that happening.

I don't like that water hose either, I am picking up some other hose on monday. My oem hose was cracked and broken.

Justin, I probable went a little extreme with the washers. I put about an 1/8" in underneath the springs with some steel washers from home depot. I took the clutch basket in and got one that were a good fit around the spring posts.

I really like the color shift paint.
I had not seriously considered doing the chain conversion since I have liked the belt for a long time, but in the past few days I have felt an urge ...   Roll Eyes ... we shall see how it all goes because if I keep adding things to do I won't get to ride until spring '08.   Undecided

with all the 4 speed trans gears on ebay, can you mix and match gears from 4 speed to 5 speed to get the ratios you want?

I think that someone nixed that idea in another post...I'm still wondering about swapping the primary drives though.  Seems that would work to me.

I know they said can't put a 5 speed in a 4 speed box.
But will gears from a 4 speed fit in a 5 speed?
Pair of gears for pair of gears swap.  In other words, replace 5th speed of an s40 with the 4th speed out of a '80's ls650.
Some of these tranny's can be picked up for $10.  That and a gasket could be  Grin
