Got a question.

Today I was out riding and it was rather windy. Suddenly my bike just dies while in 5th gear, I pulled in the clutch and tried to fire it back up, after about three tries it fired and I rode a while longer, but then it seemed almost every few feet it felt like it slipped a gear and I would have to pull in clutch, rev it up a little bit and drop to the next lower gear and I was fine. Once I got out of the worst of the wind the bike acted fine as usual before these little hickups.

Now, I was riding in an approximately 50 mph head wind doing 50mph on the speedo. I'm thinking I may have just been overtaxing the engine and tranny and it died and was slipping gears because of that. Because like I said, after I got out of the worst of the wind it acted fine.

What do ya'll think?

5th at 50 in 50?

I can't think of anything that makes sense for this one?  Were you also on a 50 degree grade?

That would be 5th at 50 in 50 up 50...and that would be completely different.

Nope, it was a straight and semi level grade.

A different issue? Greg is spot on, who knows.  Might check battery for movement or have you changed the breathing , air box mod etc??  Good luck, it sounds interesting.

45 is about minimum for 5th so maybe with the headwind it would have been happier in 4th.

The mods on my bike are K&N Drop in Filter, 152.5 Main, 55 Pilot, with Jardine slip-on.

Clutch does not slip.

Like I said, after I got out of the worst of the wind the bike acted fine.

Sounds a bit like the problem I was having with my bike.

Going about 70, it would start sputtering.  Usually, pulling in the clutch, a couple of blips and go.  Sometimes it would come back sometimes not.  Anyway it was the vacuum line to the petc0ck.  Snipped the end, pushed it back on.  It's been running fine since.

You answered my would be question...I have seen bikes with pod filters (which you don't have) go lean during gusty cross winds.  Doesn't sound like your issue.
