Shopping list for engine teardown
01/07/07 at 06:03:16

I'm going to tear down as far as the head and rejet the carb.  Here is my shopping list so far:
permatex ultra copper
plug cap seal
rh side cover gasket
head gasket
oil filter and o ring
Is there anything else I should add to the list?
Anything else I should check or replace while I'm in there?
Is there any better source for parts than the local Suzuki dealer?

When you have the RH cover off you can check the camchain-tensioner.
If it is out by 18 mm or more, but still not bent, you need to to replace the chain and the aft guide.
The rockers in the headcover and the camshaft can be examined at the time; replace as required.

Good wrenching

you should also get some anti sieze, red and blue loctite, engine degreaser, and carb cleaner. electrical contact cleaner is good for cleaning off old gaskets too.

I would also recomend going ahead and buying the gasket and o-ring kit, you never know what your going to encounter once you start tearing the thing down.

B-12 Chemtool is some really good stuff. I use El-Cheapo WalMart brand brake parts cleaner to get things cleaned up & Chemtool to get the ElCheapo stuff off.
All that stuff is no good to breathe. I keep A fan blowing across the work area . Good luck,,

I don't see High Temp Silicone Sealer for the head cover.

You can also get some of those little gaskets that go under a few of the bolts on the headcover and the RH side cover.

If you are pulling the head, then you may want to consider replacing the 4 copper washers that go under the head nuts.  They get gouged and scraped when torqued a few times.  They are cheap.

How old is the bike?

There is also a small formed 8 shaped oring that goes under the cover, I would order it also as mB-i-L's leaks now. I have them to put in both rides soon.

That's right!  Forgot that one....

And make sure you don't pinch it during reassembly Smiley

The bike is a 97 with 5000 miles that sat (for years?) unrepaired. The po put on a head from an 87 with 15k. As far as I know, all the other parts are from the 97.
And thanks for all the input!
