How do i remove the Speedometer?
12/10/06 at 05:33:12

Just a quick one guys.

I've bought a leather tankpad off e-bay and need to remove the speedometer (or at least the housing) in order to fit it? Can someone guide me on how to do this please? (I know I'm crap, but thats why this website and you guys are such a great resource)

Cheers!

Remove the tank.
On the underside are 3 nuts which you can ondo a bit and squise the tankpad under. Retighten the nuts and refit the tank.

disconnect the speed o cable from the engine case DONT lose the rubber up inside the cable and cover the engine fitting to keep carp out. remove fuel line (i do it at the carb is easier for me to get to)remove seat and tank , do your mod, while youre under there add more grease to the springs to help keep them quiet...

This may be a fix for the annoying Speedo-Tanko vibration ThumperC eluded to. I just may wait til the dead of winter and just rip-n-tear and Mod the bike. Unfortunatly, if we don't have a paralizing snow storn I won't want to "shop" or dare I say it in mixed company, Winterize the bike for repairs. Althouth the outcome will justify the means; there I said it, the bike is gonna be down this winter.  I have to get all the honey-dous completed before I claim the work area in the shed as No Womans Land. I tend to need alot of space for projects.
What kind of tankpad did you purchase? The more I see them the more I like the idea. Haven't seen one I like or met someone who will do a "custom." In this part of the land we buy off the rack. I still think that we still have talented (men and women) who can still do this work.
I appologize gang, I'm just running at the mouth, lots going on right now.
IMHO this will fix the speedo vibration and be a cool mod. If you do a search you will find a thread that actually found a fix for this. Adding the grease is a good idea as well.

Someone on this site was making & selling tank pads, you might try a search.

one more thing when you put the three nuts back on do not over tighten, the bolts are inbedded in plastic and you can break it to easy, and tighten them using a cylinder head method,a few turns on each until they are all snug.

Leather Tank Pad?  Same as a Tank Bib?

We have Tank Pad/Bibs on ours and they fit around the speedo, not under it.

No need to remove the speedo.  At the most, you might have to remove the seat to tie it on the tank.

If you have any doubts, skip the purchase.  You can certainly get the correct item for your Savage/Savage40 from the dealer.
