Why more than 1 cylinder?

Been riding all season, from april on this year with just the occasional pop. Then all of a sudden the engine started backfiring every time I changed gears.
Checked the exhaust for leaks, nothing.
Warmed up the engine to normal operating temperature ( 80C on the oiltemp gauge) turned the idle mix screw out (LH) 1/4 turn and all was fine as before.
Dont understand why, but it worked.
