franch Senior Member Offline I love YaBB 1G - SP1! Posts: 287	shimming clutch springs 09/25/06 at 08:13:12 i replaced my clutch at 20k and just the other day at 26500k i noticed a little slippage in 5th gear. can the springs be shimmed with a washer ?

With my 350LC I ended up with 3mm of spacing. Maybe go up 1mm at a time. Hope this helps. Clive W

With my CBOA hat firmly attached I will say the best reason is because it is cheap. Suzuki clutch springs are crap so why reward Suzuki with continuous orders. The shims don't allow the springs to relax to the point where they become ineffective. Another reason is you can do it right now, just go to your washer supply or to the nearest hardware store. I fully understand your belief of using upgraded parts while you have the primary off, but guess what? The supposed new and improved /heavy duty aftermarket springs don't exist. The Savage market is just too small to get the serious attention of aftermarket suppliers. Oh yeah, you can buy them, but they need to be shimmed for long life.

The clutch springs used in the Savage are not a Savage specific item, [color=Black][/color] they are also found in another Suzuki, a Kawasaki, and about 15 various Honda's. So there is a market for the aftermarket suppliers, with Barnett and Sudco being two of the outlets.
There is also a commonality in the friction plates across several makes/models.

You guys are misreading my point. I am not saying there are no aftermarket suppliers for clutch springs. What I intended to point out is the so called heavy duty/upgraded springs aftermarket manufacturers sell are not any better than stock.
I know from experience. I installed aftermarket supposedly HD springs, and they miked shorter and thinner gauge than worn out stock springs. I can only hope they are of greater tensile strength. Like I said you can buy them, but they need to be shimmed for long life.
