any fool can ride fast, that takes little skill at all. a better test of skill is how slow can you go. how long can you balance on pegs at stop light. take it over to a parking lot and practice your slow speed manuvering. get that down pat, and you conquered the hardest part of riding.

Good point sluggo! I don't consider myself an "accomplished" Rider by any means ... but I can occasionally come to a complete stop and balance without putting my feet down before making a right hand turn!!

I'm always trying that. Someday I want to stop for a full minute, feet up & go. Just to baffle the cager behind me. Grin I'm OK for a few seconds, then gotta put the boot down.

Yeah but the cop behind you will still be wondering how you did that as you thumped off, he'll forget to pull you!

True! Happened to a friend of mine in High School. After that, if we we're out cruising in the car & came to that stop sign, we all opened the doors & put out feet on the street before proceeding. Just for laughs. I may have told this before, can't remember, gettin' old. Tongue

My husband and I just took an "Experienced rider course".  Most of the time was spent on slow speed drills.

Thinking back over the decades....   two drops over 5 mph.  No count on the less than 5 mph drops -- broke a collar bone on one!  Yep.  Need to practice low speed more.

I won the beer keg push on my Savage. You have to go slow or the keg will cross the line and you get disqualified.  Feet touch the ground, you get disqualified. I got the keg across the finish line, put a boot down, and fell over. I was tired. It's a LOT of work to hold one upright slow.

For fun, I tried balancing my v-twin at no speed. Uh uh, ain't happening. Having a 500+ pound bike fall over on you is no fun.

No question about it, slow speed movements are much tougher.  One of the most difficult times I have had riding was passing the motorcycle riding test in Arizona.  I had a ton of riding experience, but I made the mistake of taking my CX500 to the test.  They had the cones set up in a small area that was surrounded by chain-link fence.  The fenced in area was only slightly bigger than the size needed for the cones.  This meant that you could never build up any speed for the manuevers.  Luckily the tester allowed me to practice a few times and then was very patient with me during the test.  It would have been much easier on a small bike like a 125cc.

I practice this when I encounter logjams on the freeway on the ride home.  Unfortunately we don't have legal lane-splitting in Texas yet.

I practice the stop and balance and most every stop sign and light. And I agree that  slow speed handling is a lot tougher  - one of the great things about our little bike.

That Hyosung I drove the other day sure wasn't as easy.
