Automatic decompression

Hi

Should the cable at the top of the head next to the plug move when trying to start. I'm having a bit of trouble starting my '87 Savage but can't see any movement of the decompression mechanism. Maybe a faulty solenoid??

Yes it should.  When the engine is at TDC on the compression stroke, the free paly should be 3-5 mm, I believe.  Maybe you have a dead decomp. solenoid or relay, or the cable free play is wrong.

It should click pretty loud - does it?

Make sure your battery measures well over 12.3v

It my need to be pulled and cleaned. The plunger on my B-i-L's 87 was gunked up and had not worked for awhile. After cleaning and adjusting it works like it is supposed to. Max
