TDC: Exhaust vs Compression Stroke

Hey gang,

So finding TDC is realtively easy. Now the question is, "How do I tell when it's on the exhaust or compression stroke?"

Which set of valves do I need to watch for which motion?

& to be sure:

"When I adjust my valves, do I do it on the exhaust or compression stroke?" Another thread says the compression stroke, but I don't want to do it a 3rd time (yet).

Oh, and any of you experts who feel like going on a rant, please feel free to do so. Especailly if you want to tell us about V-twins, too.

Sorry for my ignorance, but wathcing the intake valves close will then set me to the compression cycle, correct? Which is where I should adjust my valves, correct?

Let me think... the piston goes down after the exhasut stroke (and the exhaust valves close). This draws in fuel and air from the carb while the intake valves are open. For the compression, both sets of valves should be closed. The piston comes back up. Spark. Compression. When the piston starts coming up again, the exhaust valves open. restart cycle. Seems right... ?

Finding TDCC on the Savage/S40 could be a good thing to post though.

Yeah, been over there. I didn't see anything about doing it on the compression stroke, though. I don't mind doing it. A lot of the folks around here, me included, only have a fuzzy idea about what we are doing. Many non-experienced shade tree mechanics are a bit nervous to do much besides changing the oil, or maybe playing w/ the carb... and would like step by step instructions... with photos...
