'97 main jet size?

Hey all. I'm going to get a K&N drop-in and possibly do the snorkelectomy in the next week or two. I know this will necessitate a main jet upsizing, too. So what's my stock size? I'm thinking one denomination (2.5) above is a good place to start.

I see many of you running 152.5. I trust this works pretty well regardless of year?

stock on the '97 is a 145 main so depending on your altitude it takes a 147.5 or a 150 to get the engine where it should be with no other changes, so add a free flow exhaust add 1 jet size, add a free flow intake add 1 more - so a 152.5 would be a good start if your doing both but I'd have a 155 in my pocket as well.

have you work over the mixture and mid range yet via needle jet white spacer (cut down, or replace with washers, or needle with c-clip slots) ? more important than the main jet to get correct unless you run WOT all the time.

I did the white spacer removal. Cut it out completely.

I seem to remember a time when that was preferred among Savage tinkerers instead of filing or doing some sort of half-spacer mod.

Presently, the bike idles a bit rich. Starts regularly without choke on warm mornings. I run almost all my miles at 65 mph, though, thus the thinking I should richen up. Also figured with my new exhaust (well, it came off a 1975 Honda CB500T, so it's got little in the way of baffling left after all those years) and the upcoming K&N and snorkelectomy, it was time to figure out what to do.

So 152.5, but keep a 155 in mind?

Reply #5 - 06/21/06 at 12:34:25 My 98 ran just the same with the 152.5 as she did with the 155, except the 152.5 got better mileage. That was using the MAC muffler and a K&N filter (direct swap for stock, not pod) and a snorkelectomy.

Seems to me snorkelectomy means removing the snorkel and bolting a pod right onto the carb... sounds mutually exclusive.

Nope, the snorkelectomy is the removal of the snorkel whether you do anything to your air filter or not. It will increase airflow. I did this and replaced my stock filter with a K&N direct-swap right in the airbox... no pod at all. The direct-swap is just that. It's a K&N filter that replaces the stock filter but is reusable oiled cotton instead of paper. If you use a pod, there is no purpose in doing the snorkelectomy.
