Posts: 57 South Florida Gender:	Blue pipes 06/12/06 at 12:49:00 I am sure this has been talked about before, I just don't know where or when. What causes excessive blueing on the pipe? My bike is 11 years old but only has 4100 miles on it. Seems much bluer than other Savages I see. Also has any one installed a Supertrappe muffler? Is it easy to do? Slip right on? Appreciate any help and info. Thanks

Blue exhaust is very lean jetting.

I have a Supertrapp. Installation wasn't difficult once I removed some of the end of the header pipe. Take off just enough so that the mounting bolt lines up. I put some high temp silicone on and slipped it right on the header pipe.

Use a grinder to shorten the pipe and keep it cool with a wet towel.

I've always been told that gold is, as the childrens' story book goes, "juuuuust right."

Mine is very blue, however. Will be rejetting and getting a K&N before the riding season is over down here. During summer, ol' Zook is pretty well my only transport, so I want to keep her happy. I'll probably put another 6k or so on her this season, if things keep going the way they have been. Just started back to riding (after mild customization--sorry no pics yet) a couple months ago and have already put 2k on it, going from 12,000 to 14,000 miles. Oil change coming soon, of course.

Now if they only had double walled pipes, we'd never know what was going on. Actually, in the day, all the Bonnie riders had blue pipes so they could brag about riding so fast and hard.

pgolden Ex Member	Re: Blue pipes Reply #6 - 06/13/06 at 16:49:05 My pipe has not changed color, When I bought it I had a Jardine muffler with a 155 main, now I have a sportster muffler and 152.5 main. My spark plug is that nice light brown color that tells me all is right.

My pipe was gold when I bought it, and its still gold right now. Hasn't changed colors one bit. I never have figured out why the MAC muffler blued just past the header pipe connection though. Guess it was my greasy fingers on it and failing to wipe it off before I fired it up is all I can figure, cause when I put the MAC on I rejetted so I never did run the bike lean with that particular muffler.

Replaced it last year with a Jardine.Much better quality pipe.No blueing of header pipe with either pipe,guess i guessed the right sized main an pilot jets.

You're lean. Raise the needle a notch (lower the clip) and maybe go up one size on the main jet. You should read your plug after a WOT shut down to see how your main jet is.

mickthelimey Ex Member	Re: Blue pipes Reply #12 - 07/02/06 at 01:18:14 I think I posted this before,but to prevent pipes from bluing in the first place is to wrap some copper wire around the header as close as you can to the head,about 4 or 5 times around should do it,the gauge should be one eighth inch or less,change it every year.
