What is my carb type
05/08/06 at 02:04:44

I don't know what my carb type is but I need to know it because of the rejetting. Is it a mikuni or what?
So can you figure it out? Here are the pictures of my carb:

Sorry for the dirt and oil...

The other question is that does the Keihin jet fit it. My local Harley dealer has jets only for Keihin carbs. I read here that they probably fit:

It's a Mikuni BS40. I don't know if Keihin jets would fit, never tried it.

Thank you a lot. Meanwhile I found another company who deals Mikuni stuff. I will contact them today.

According to the book, the physical measurements of the jets are different (Mikuni vs Keihin), and then the numbering system for the jet orafice size...I have no idea whether they are even close or not.  I do know that the numbering for Amal jets are not the same as the Mikuni.

and do remember the jet has a washer under it that likes to fall out and go under the starter - put a towel over the starter any time you're doing work on the bike.

also the screws that hold the bowl on are very soft - use a good phillps and a lot of presure to break these lose or they will strip out, and replace them with stainless allen head.

The book I spoke of is the Sudco dealers manual/catalog.

If you are looking for a book to use at home there is the Sudco/Mikuni Tuning Manual...an excellent source for carb theory and practical jetting/tuning information, parts, diagrams...it is "step 1", in the "12 step program".
The book can be found on ebay.

I am not a great mechanic but hopefully I can do the rejetting myself. As I did the seat mod yesterday in 1/2 hour.
Which book do you recommend to buy _generally_? Clymer?

Anyway I ordered the 152.5 main jet. And discussed the choke knob problem too with tha dealer who is a Mikuni specialist.

well you see the 152.5 is only 3 jets bigger than the stock 145 main jets these US ls650s have stock - but some of the euro bikes have like a 125 main - so the 152.5 world be like 10 or 11 sizes bigger - not good.

So you need to know what the ls400 has in there before you plan on doing the swap

My bike is from Japan (if it matters). I mean that is made for Japan and was importes as used from there.

How can I determine the size of the jet? Is it written on it?

around here the problem is the ls400 is quite rare just 2 of you I think so how they came stock is not known.

the size will be stamped on the top - and if you are a  old geezer like me it takes my glasses and some very good light to be able to see it - 150 Mikuni large round

Grin 20 years now as a programmer and still not need glasses. But my eyes are always burned, sometimes watery.

Yesterday I tried to remove the bottom of the carb but those 4 bolts were so stucked I couldn't unscrew them. I think they weren't moved for the 10 years since my bike was made. That's a pity. Even with an L shaped screwdriver they didn't move.

Me too, wrote 360/370 assembler for about 15- it was the next 15 that did the eyes in - or perhaps the other side of 50. you may need to remove it so you can enough pressure on the screws with a phillips bit to break them lose
