Need advice - replacing cam chain
04/24/06 at 06:08:50

Okay . . . it's been a while, but I'm back.  Wink I posted a few months ago that my bike lost all compression.  Finally got around to pulling the motor.  Just as i suspected, the cam chain broke!   Shocked

As far as i can tell, though, i got really lucky.  The valves and piston look fine (it broke at idle, and I didn't hear any smashing sounds).  Smiley

So, I need to replace the chain.  I have the cylinder head off, and the right side motor cover off already.

I've searched around on the board, and gotten some good info.  but people use different terminology, which has me a little confused.   ???

I'm attaching a diagram of the cam chain system.  I have 2 questions:

1)  Which of these parts should i replace (aside from the chain itself)?

2)  Any other 'gotchas' i should look out for?

Since you have the head off - i'd go with at least 1,2,3,6, and 8 - unless 2 and 3 looked very good -

Apart from the chain and tensioner:
#3 and #2 and have a look at #7. Check the play in the hole of the tensioner.

The primairy gearnut has LH tread. You can lock/hold it with a penny inbetween the primairy- and clutch-gear.
